Essential Estonian Family Vocabulary for A2 Learners

Knowing Estonian family vocabulary is crucial for A2 learners. This includes words like 'vend' for brother and 'õde' for sister, which you’ll need for both everyday conversations and the state exam.

EXPLANATION Family words are fundamental in Estonian, as they're used frequently in both spoken and written forms. When learning these words, focus on their basic forms and how they change with different grammatical cases. For instance, 'isa' means 'father' and 'ema' means 'mother'. To indicate possession, you would say 'minu isa' for 'my father' and 'minu ema' for 'my mother'. In Estonian, nouns change form based on their role in the sentence, which is determined by cases. For example, 'vend' (brother) in the nominative case changes to 'venna' in the genitive case. Similarly, 'õde' (sister) becomes 'õe'. Understanding these variations is key to mastering family vocabulary. Remember, the nominative case is used for the subject, while the genitive is often used to show possession.

EXAMPLES 1. Minu ema on õpetaja. — My mother is a teacher. This shows possession using 'minu'. 2. Isa läheb tööle. — Father goes to work. 'Isa' is the subject of the sentence. 3. Ma külastan oma vanemaid. — I visit my parents. Here, 'vanemaid' is in the partitive case, used for the object. 4. Vend ja õde on kodus. — Brother and sister are at home. This sentence describes a location.

COMMON MISTAKE Wrong: Ma räägin minu ema. Corrected: Ma räägin oma emaga. Why: 'Oma' is used to indicate possession more naturally in Estonian, and 'emaga' uses the comitative case, which means 'with'.

QUICK CHECK 1. 'My sister is at school.' (Minu õde on koolis.) 2. 'Father is a doctor.' (Isa on arst.)
